Pharisees approach Jesus questioning him on divorce...

Today we have a gospel which has been made famous by John Paul the Great and his writings on the Theology of the Body. It is the occasion when the Pharisees question Jesus about divorce in order to try and put him to the test. John Paul uses the reply that Jesus gives using the phrase "in the beginning."

From our point of view we are more interested in the rising tension between Jesus and the Pharisees and how they use the law to try to justify their position. As the west becomes more secularised we can see such behaviour again as "rights" of one group are used to trample the rights of another. When we remove God from society all we have to rely on is the Law; people and such principles become unimportant.

From this we get the saying, "the law is blind." Jesus saw through their plan and gave them an answer that both highlighted their own misunderstanding of God and their hypocracy. He does the same in our lives, when we begin to think we are above others!
