Clare's birth name was Chiara Offreduccio, and she was born in Assisi in 1193. A devout girl, her parents wanted her to marry when she was 15 but Clare asked to be let wait till she was 18 before marrying.
In the meantime she heard Francis of Assisi preach and his preaching began to change her life. Francis told her she was chosen by God for a great work. Clare ran away from home, went to Francis and founded with a small group of women at San Domiano a convent.
At first they were known as the "Poor Ladies" because they lived a life of extreme poverty and austerity. The Order of Poor Ladies was a monastic religious order for women in the Franciscan tradition, St Clare wrote their Rule of Life—the first monastic rule known to have been written by a woman. After her death they became known as the Poor Clares and are still known by this name today. When Clare died in 1253 her order had grown into a large organization. It is still a great order in the Church and has many convents living the strict monastic life.
