The first reading today is from the letter of St John and the opening of the reading gives us a great promise on prayer--if we ask anything that is in accord with God's will we shall receive.
Then John goes on to say that if we know he shall answer us then we can live as if we have already received the answer to our prayers. In other words if we ask for something we can assume that God shall grant it and go on with our lives.
How many of us live like that? We are constantly living in doubt, asking God over and over again for things, even after we have received what we need. It is as if we want an insurance policy.
Later in the reading John tells us that Jesus protects the person who trusts in him, and that the evil one cannot touch him.
When I read this I wonder to myself, "why do I still doubt?" Sometimes we are all a little afraid and doubting, but we keep trying to trust in God. In this way we grow a little every day.
