Reading I: Josua 24:14-29
Responsorial: Psalm 16:1-2a and 5, 7-8, 11
Gospel: Matthew 19:13-15
The gospel relates how the people brought children to Jesus to receive a blessing and the apostles were turning the children away. Jesus intervened and allowed them to come forward saying that it was to such as these that the kingdom of God belonged.
The two readings are connected in that Joshua lays down a choice, God or self, and Jesus says that to choose God you must have the attitude of a child, trusting, loving, forgiving, and then with that attitude you can see how wonderful the love of God is. Smart people, worldly people, find it incredibly hard to see past their own pride and allow God to work in their lives. Children have no problem!!!
