lives in me and I live in him'
I have waited all week for this passage of scripture because it contains what must be the most beautiful line written anywhere about the Eucharist and the most astounding fact we could ever consider about God and ourselves: "As I, who am sent by the living father, draw life from the Father, so whoever eats my flesh shall draw life from me." What this means is that I, an insignificent little man, am only one step removed from the Father when I recieve communion.
Think of it, the Father gives life to the Son and the Son passes this life on to us. It recalls the line of Pope St Leo the Great, "Oh, Christian, realise thy dignity, it is the devine life in which you share," or again the Offertry prayer at Mass, "by the mystery of this water and wine may we come to share in the divinity of Christ who humbled himself to share in our humanity."
What a privilege to go to mass. What a blessing!
