In todays Gospel, Jesus makes his most direct claim to be God. The Pharisees, as usual, are trying to catch him out. Jesus opens the dialogue with "whoever keeps my word will never see death," to which the Jews reply, "who are you claiming to be?" After talking about seeking glory etc. Jesus comes to his crux point: "I tell you most solemnly, before Abraham ever was, I Am." Here Jesus uses the proper name of God, "Yahweh" and applies it to himself. The Jews would not even use this word to describe God because it was too sacred; and here, this wandering Rabbi uses it as his own name! No wonder they went mad. What a claim for any person to make....but Jesus is not just any person....soon he will rise from the dead and enter his glory!
