Today we enter in to ordinary time, the Christmas season is over. Ordinary Time does not mean that there is nothing going on in the church year. All it means is that there are no major feasts or liturgical seasons being celebrated at the moment.
Holy Mother Church has something to say to us every day and we find that something in the daily readings.
Today we have the beginning of Paul's letter to the Romans and the beginning of Mark's gospel. We are basically going right back to the start. Paul's letter tells us that God has sent his son as the definitive revelation of Himself, and how the son has destroyed "the defilement of sin."
Mark relates the beginning of Jesus' public ministry and how Jesus declares that the Kingdom of God is at hand. Jesus also calls four of his soon to be disciples to follow him.
Even here as we begin ordinary time, the church is setting before us the person of Jesus. Our faith is not made up of dogma or books. The Catholic church is about belief in a real person. That person is Jesus, both God and man. The belief in Jesus as God is the whole essence of Catholic faith. Watch how through the year the Church constantly reminds us of this fact.
