Jesus said to his disciples:
“You have heard that it was said,
You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.
But I say to you, love your enemies
and pray for those who persecute you,
that you may be children of your heavenly Father,
for he makes his sun rise on the bad and the good,
and causes rain to fall on the just and the unjust.
For if you love those who love you, what recompense will you have?
Do not the tax collectors do the same?
And if you greet your brothers only,
what is unusual about that?
Do not the pagans do the same?
So be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect."

Watch the tabloid press and see how little forgiveness there is in the world. People are destroyed for past sins and all is cast up with glee. Not so with God. When we ask forgiveness we receive it immediately, and it is complete, not partial. Nor does it depend on our future behaviour. God does not keep a big book ready to cast up at us any sin we have committed as proof that we are really no good.
The ways of God are so different from ours. God is so bountiful that he causes the sun to shine on good as well as bad people. This is because he is constantly calling sinners to return. He makes no difference between people. It is our attitude to him that sets us apart. While we are unwilling to admit wrong we are unable to change. Before we can repent we have to see that we have sinned. God gives us good things in the hope that we might see his love and return to the fold.
