In today's gospel, the ability of Jesus to drive out demons and heal the sick causes the people to be astonished. The work of God should always astonish us, but unfortunately for us we are sophisticated people who know how cures take place, so we don't see the work of God very often.
Perhaps we don't look in the right places.
The spiritual life, where forgiveness takes place is the best place to look for the work of God. When we see reconciliation and friendships renewed and old hurts forgotten then we see the love and power of God.
When we look for the spectacular we seldom see God. He does not work like that. The God of faith does not explain or prove himself; he reveals himself only where he finds faith. That is his nature. So we can only really see him with the eyes of faith. A piece of bread is a piece of bread. It shall never be the body of Christ until we make the act of faith that we believe what Jesus professed and the church teaches and says. Then, after the consecration, this bread is changed to the Body of Christ.
We should train ourselves to see the world through the eyes of faith. Then Jesus is everywhere, even in the most simple of places.
