There is a lot in today's reading but a couple of points stand out.
First, the message of Jesus brings division between those who accept it and those who do not. This will leave individuals with hard choices as family members, friends and neighbours will disagree with the way we live. This division, particularly in families, becomes part of the cross that we have to carry. And we must simply take it up and follow Jesus. We must be true to ourselves, no matter what.
Secondly, the last sentence of today's gospel shows us that Jesus took the apostles apart and trained them for a specific mission. He taught the apostles first and then they in turn went to teach the people. It is obvious from this that Jesus was preparing a Church, laying down simple structures to be built upon. People who say, "I don't need a church to meet God" should reflect on what the scripture says.
Jesus knew exactly what he was about!
