Gospel of Luke 7:11-17 Reflection:
There was a great talk given at the Eucharistic Congress by a Professor O'Donnell from a university in the US in which he mentioned today's gospel, the raising from the dead of the son of the widow of Nain.
Professor O'Donnell was talking about the priesthood and how the priest should reflect the life of Jesus. He asked the question, why did Jesus feel such pity for the woman?
His reply hit me very hard in its simplicity and in its sadness; in the widow, who had no husband and only one son, Jesus saw a reflection of what his mother in years to come would experience. This would be Mary on the day of his death and Jesus could not look upon such a scene being endured by someone else.
This thought gave me much to reflect upon during the conference for me. I hope it brings you to ponder and contemplate the mercy of Jesus.
