Reading I: Numbers 11:4b-15

Gospel: Matthew 14:22-36
Born in Naples in 1696, Alphonsus received a double doctorate in civil and canon law. However it was his work in Moral Theology that led to him being made a doctor of the Church.
He founded the Redemptorist Order, commonly known as the "Reds." His writings are very deceptive. On one hand they are very easy to read and on the other they contain great depth. In one of this writings on the Love of Christ he says, "Consider well, that in loving I was first." Here is one sentence on which we could gainfully ponder for a lifetime, the fact that God has loved us from all eternity and has loved us into being. He then goes on to say that God gave us all of creation as a free gratis gift....but finding that that was not enough for us he also gave us himself in his Son.
Writings such as this have led to the great influence of St Alphonsus over the years.
