Feast of St Alphonsus Liguori, Bishop and Doctor
Today we celebrate the feast of another of the great founders of an order. St Alphonsus founded the Redemptorists in the early 1700s. Born in Naples in 1696, Alphonsus obtained a doctorate in both Canon and Civil Law. An ardent preacher and in high demand as a confessor, he also found time to write books of devotion and aids to personal holiness.
It was with this in mind, the piety of the laity, that Alphonsus formed his congregation. He wanted a group of priest who could devote themselves to the building up of ordinary people.
The Redemptorists are now a world wide order who spend their time giving parish missions and retreats. They also do a lot of work promoting the faith throughout the media.
St Alphonsus also found time to write an important book which is still used as a work of reference; The History of Heresies and their Refutation.
