St Bernard is one of the great Doctors of the Church and was effectively the founder of the Cistercian Order. The order had been founded in 1098 but was dying on its feet when Bernard and a group of men joined in 1111. By his death in 1153 he had founded 65 new monasteries.
Bernard is famous for his writings on the Song of Songs and for his teachings on love. A very practical man, he was often called out of his monastery by the Pope to settle disputes among kings and princes.
Saint Bernard writing Philippe Quantin (c. 1600 -.1636)
Bernard taught a very simple but effective method of getting to heaven;
"Consentire est salvire" ; to consent is to be saved.
What he is saying is that if we consent freely to the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives we shall eventually come to know God.
