Matthew constantly uses quotes from the Old Testament to show that Jesus is the fulfillment of the Law and the promised Messiah. Most of today's gospel is a quote from Isaiah and speaks of Jesus as a chosen servant, the favorite of my soul, a prophet, gentle and ultimately victorious.
Matthew was writing for the new church in a time of persecution and shortly after the church had finally broken away from the Jewish faith. The converts in the church had to be shown that Jesus was who he claimed to be and that there was a continuity between Scriptures (Old Testaments) and the fulfillment of the Law (New Testaments).
For us, we need to see the continuity in our lives. If we look back in hindsight we see where God and Jesus have been there all along even when we did not recognise it.
This faith thing is not something we have discovered. It has been there all along, even when we did not know it! We were simply too occupied with other things!
