Very little is known about the life of St Cecilia and what is known of her is all legend with no factual basis.
It was reported early in church history that there was a church built in her honour but no firm record of the church exists.
However, the story says that St Cecilia converted her husband and her brother to Christianity and that the three of them died during the early persecutions, probably the persecution of Diocletian.
There was eventually a church built to St Cecilia in the 5th century and her veneration increased after the publication of a book "The Passion of St Cecilia" which presented her as an example of perfect womanhood.
Pope Paschal I is said to have had a dream in the ninth century where he was shown the place where the remains of Sr Cecilia were lying in the Catacombs. A body was found and a statue was created and now displayed in Rome, showing the position that St Cecilia is supposed to have lain in as she died.
Cecilia is the patron of musicians and Church music.
