Although her parents were Spanish, Rose was born in Lima, Peru, in 1568. She became a member of the third order of St Dominic and lived a life of penance and prayer. She prayed especially for the coversion of the native people of South America. She died in 1617.
The gospel chosen for this feast reflects the work of St Rose. It is Matthew 13:44-46 and is about the treasure hidden in the field and the pearl of great price. Rose did nothing special, she lived a life of prayer and contemplation.. But in her community, she was a pearl of great worth and a treasure hidden in the field of people...and her prayers bore fruit. This is what we are called to do,--- bear fruit where we are planted. If we do just that, no dramatics, no great jestures, then God shall do the rest!
