Jesus was born to the people of Israel. Starting out in Nazareth Jesus went about Galilee preaching, spreading his message. The symbolism of today's gospel should not be missed.
The mother and relatives of Jesus come to see him. We are not told the reason but we are told they were anxious to speak to him. "Its you mum," you can almost hear Peter say.
Jesus replies that all people who hear the word of God and obey it are the new members of his family.
He is widening out his message, outside family clan and nation. "Anyone" implies that this new message that the kingdom of God is at hand, is open to anyone. By saying anyone Jesus is including us all. He is saying that we are welcome into this new way of seeing the world, a world that is God centered, not Law based or tradition based.
