Reading I: 1 Thessalonians 4:1-8
Responsorial: Psalms 97:1 and 2b, 5-6, 10, 11-12
Gospel: Matthew 25:1-13
The ten bridesmaids went to wait on the bridegroom; five had enough oil, five had not. When the bridegroom came - the five who had not enough oil, their lamps had gone out, and had gone to buy oil...missed the bridegroom altogether.
The oil is the Holy Spirit. We are to use every opportunity to increase the presence of the Spirit within us, be that prayer, attendence at Mass, or reading scripture. Then when the darkness comes we have enough oil in the lamps of our heart to meet Jesus freely.
We spend so much time doing fruitless things. This is Jesus telling the disciples that life is a time of preparation for the coming of the "bridegroom" and that we have plenty of opportunity to get ready for that coming. We have to remember, the time given to us in this life is there for a purpose - we make a choice every time we do an action - is it wise or foolish?
