Joachim and Anne were the parents of the Blessed Virgin. Their names have come down to us from the second century and we have no reason to doubt that these were their true names. It is hard to imagine having Jesus as a grandson.
The gospel acclamation for today reads, "They looked forward to Israel's comforting and the Holy Spirit rested upon them." What sort of remarkable house would theirs have been? Our lady, who was not born with the stain of original sin would have shone like a beacon in her goodness and virtue. Did Joachim and Anne ever wonder what would become of her? They must have. You could not possibly have someone of Mary's stature in your home and not see how different she was. The years of waiting for her mission to unfold. The trials when she fell pregnant and her not yet married, the wonder at the silence and majesty of Mary as she raised her son. Joachim and Anne would have had a lot to ponder!!!!
