Feast of St Augustine Bishop, Doctor We had the feast of St Monica yesterday. Today we have the feast of her son, Augustine. Augustine was born in Thagaste in modern day Algeria in the year 354AD.
As a young man he studied the philosophy current in the Roman empire of the time and he had a son. Eventually his search for truth brought him to the Catholic faith and when he did embrace it he embraced it fully.
He was converted and baptized by St Ambrose of Milan. After that he returned home and led a monk's life. He was elected the Bishop of Hippo and he gathered a community of monks around him, with whom he lived while bishop.
Augustine was one of the most important thinkers in the church and his influence is still felt today. He was a prolific writer and is most famous for the saying,
"You have made us for thyself, Oh Lord, and our heart shall not rest until it rests in you."
