In this age where the belief that everyone will go to heaven, that a loving God could send no one to hell and that everyone shall be saved no matter what they do, perhaps we should stop and reflect on how many times Jesus himself actually talks about judgment and hell.
In today's gospel he states that the act of judgement is part of the kingdom of heaven. The souls are before God and then sorted out and this takes place in the kingdom. What this means exactly we do not know, but Jesus speaks so often about judgement and souls being lost to hell that we would do well to reflect on what he says.
I don't know about judgement and damnation etc. We, as humans, cannot take in eternity and all it means. But somewhere deep inside we all know that we shall give an account of our lives.... but we trust in the mercy of a loving God who takes saving us from hell a lot more serious than we think.
After all, he sent his son to die for us to show us how serious he is about saving us!
