From Christmas 'til Jan 1st the gospels were all about the birth of Jesus. Now from the 2nd 'til the 6th January the gospels discuss who Jesus is. The 1st reading today, from the letter of John, clearly proclaims Jesus as the Messiah and saviour.
In the gospel John, the Baptist is asked if he is the Christ. He clearly answers that he is not but he also says that the one who is to come after him is already in our midst. John is pointing towards Jesus, and to show how accurate he is, John uses an old testament quotation about preparing the way of the Lord.
The Church in an orderly fashion, using the letters and gospel of John presents to us this week who Jesus really is. We need to pay attention to what we are hearing and just as Mary did, ponder within our hearts the meaning of what we have heard.
