Born in 1491 Ignatius became one of the great men of the counter reformation and founded one of the great orders of the church, the Jesuits or the Society of Jesus, to give them their proper name. Born in Loyola in Northern Spain, Ignatius became a soldier and it was while he was being treated for wounds received in battle that his faith began to grow. He left the army and went to Paris to study theology.
After he was ordained he and some companions formed the Jesuits to show the errors of the reformation and also to reform the Church from within. Ignatius is also famous for a thirty day retreat that he developed.
The motto for the Jesuit order is "All for the greater glory of God". St Ignatius taught that it isn't between good and bad which is difficult to decipher - but between what is good and better. Our choice should always be for the greater glory of God.
