Of all the men who have ever gotten a bad press, poor old Thomas must be the most unfortunate. "Doubting Thomas" for all time. What a name!
And yet his doubts are perfectly understandable. Jesus, who had promised so much, was revealed as a failure, tortured and killed as a criminal and now the other apostles said he was alive. What would we have said had we seen a great leader executed by lethal injection and two days later someone comes along and says he is alive?
All Thomas does is reflect the myriad doubts we have every day when we say and believe that God cannot help us in this situation.
Jesus calls us to stick out our finger or hand and touch him in faith. When we do so we realize that he is here with us and is available as a person right now, available to talk too and to listen to our constant chatter. We're lucky. Thomas asked the question for us so that we can learn not to doubt!
