We continue with the question of who Jesus is as the two disciples of the Baptist catch up with Jesus as he walks along. Unable to think of what to say to him when Jesus asks, "what do you want?" they reply "Rabbi, where do you live?" It feels like one of those embarrassing moments when you are caught out with nothing to say.
Jesus replies, "Come and see." This is the call of Jesus to all people over all the ages, "come and see." We are told that it was about 4pm and that the disciples spent the rest of the day with the Lord. Andrew goes to tell Simon about the new master that he has found. Simon comes to meet Jesus and he is given a new name; Peter.
What a piece of writing. In seven verses of scripture we have a very important question, a universal answer, the recognition of Jesus by Andrew, as someone special, perhaps even the messiah, the first evangalisation of Peter by Andrew, and the setting up of Peter as the authority of the earthly church.
A lot in a short piece of writing!
