St Elizabeth of Portugal appears to be one of those people who should have lived in religious life but circumstances prevented this for a time. From the royal family of Aragon she was married off to the king of Portugal at age 12. They had two children in an unhappy marriage and after her husbands death, Elizabeth renounced worldly possessions and joined a convent.
A war of succession broke out between her son and grandson and while trying to broker peace between the factions she died.
Elizabeth lived a life of prayer and fasting, doing penance and helping the sick.
For me the important point is that children should be allowed to follow their own dreams and not the plans of convenience or ambition that parents have for them.
Elizabeth seems to be the sort of girl who would have made a good nun but family politics never allowed her to follow her obvious calling in life.
