Today, we have one of those readings that give a great promise and a great warning. It begins with the marvellous statement of God's love; "God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son...." and goes on to give the great promise of "no one who believes in him shall be codemned." Belief in Jesus as Son of God effects our life. It makes us at least want to break from sin. We may not be able to completely free ourselves from sinful habits but as we grow towards Jesus we grow more and more to dislike those things in ourselves that seperate us from God. This hatred of sin is a great spiritual blesing for us and God looks favourably on those who are weak but try their best. The great warning is for those who have heard of Jesus and refuse to believe; i.e. those who know Jesus is someone special, who see the good work he does in people's hearts and still "prefer" a life of sin. These people are condemning themselves by obstinately refusing God's help in their lives and are setting themselves on a path that shall refuse God's love when the time of judgement comes. Jesus goes on to say that those who do wrong hate the light (Jesus) for fear that the light will expose their sins. We all have that fear of being seen as we really are....but that is how God sees us!
