Early mosaic of St Ambrose that might be an actual portrait.
Feast of St Ambrose St Ambrose is famous and important for several things. He was in Trier in about the year AD 340 and studied Law in Rome before entering the civil service. While working in Milan he was chosen to be bishop even before he was baptized and was ordained on Dec 7th 374. Ambrose became a great theologian who wrote against the Arians and defended the rights of the church. Ambrose also was the man who baptized St. Augustine of Hippo into the church.
At the time of Ambrose, the church was the official religion of the Roman Empire and the politicians were trying to use the church for their own ends and were trying to influence the church to do their bidding. He resisted both of these strands of political interference. His homilies are well worth a read. Today we see the same things going on. The politicians are trying to force the church to accept laws and morals that are against her teaching; the battle lines between those who want to be members of the church and those who want to force her into secularism have never been more stark. At times like this we need to remember men like Ambrose! They give us great hope.
