If you have ever been to a desert, you shall understand why water is such a symbol of life. Today, John continues his great talk on the Eucharist with the miracle of Jesus walking on water. Yesterday we had the story of Jesus feeding thousands with a few loaves and fish. This was to show his dominion over the material world. Now he walks on water; John is symbolically telling us that Jesus has dominion over life, for water is the symbolic source of life. As Jesus walks accross the top of the water, it represents his abilitiy to be Lord over life. He is untouched by life, not in a way that puts him in a sort of mythical stance but he is above life and has ultimate control over it. John is preparing us for the greatest teaching of all, that Jesus gives us his flesh and blood to eat and drink, as he does so he shows that Jesus is Lord of nature and Lord of life. We should be prepared then to hear that he is Lord of all things spiritual as well!
