Today we have the feast of the founder of one of the great orders of the church.
St Dominic was born at Calateuga in Spain sometime around 1170AD. At this time in the church various heresies were prevalent and some of these led to violent uprisings among the people. There was no doubt that there were genuine grievances among the people but certain preachers took the protests too far and fell into heresy.
Dominic formed a group "The Order of Preachers" to preach the true doctrine of the Church. Soon there was a large number of these scholars and preachers. Among their number was Albert the Great and Thomas Aquinas, two of the greatest minds the church has ever known. The Dominicans still today focus on sound doctrine and preaching and with the modern heresies their work is as necessary as ever.
