Today's 1st reading is one of those beautiful readings where God tenderly speaks to and of Israel as his betrothed and loved one. He speaks of Israel as a woman whom he shall lure out to the desert and seduce her. He promises fidelity and justice, tenderness and love.
People read so many mystical things into these writings but sometimes it is best to just enjoy the beauty of the words, letting yourself feel the love and tenderness that God feels for Israel.
The last line is the great promise;
"And you shall come to know the Lord."
That is always the promise, the close intimate union with God, best reflected in the union of man and wife. No wonder marriage is a sacrament!
