Gospel of John 6:1-15 Reflection:
Today we begin reading the 6th chapter of St John's gospel which is the great chapter on the bread of life.
The first reading ties in with this story in that Gamaliel remarks to the Jews that they should be careful because if it is not from God then this movement shall break up by itself but if it is from God then there is nothing they can do and in fact could end up fighting God himself.
The story of the feeding the five thousand with a few loaves and fish is used by John to show the divinity of Christ and his power over the material world: if Jesus wants to feed 5000 with a few loaves and fish he can do it. By extension, if he wants to feed the world with is body then he can also do that.
There is no real difference other than numbers, in the two acts. Jesus, by feeding 5000 shows dominion over the material world, he is Lord of the physical universe and can do whatever he wants with it, even turn his body into food for all.
