Gospel of John 6:16-21 Reflection:
Yesterday, Jesus showed his dominion over nature and the physical world by feeding the multitude with a few loaves and fish. Today he shows his dominion over life.
For the Jewish people, living in a semi desert area, and many of whom actually lived in the desert, water was the sign of life; no water, no life.
When the disciples got into the boat and began to row. The waters got rough, just as life does sometimes, and the wind blew, reflecting the storms of life that afflict us.
Jesus comes walking calmly across the waters (of life) and tells the disciples not to be afraid.
When he reached the boat, that is when Jesus comes into our lives, the boat reached the safety of dry land. John does not say that Jesus calmed the storm. The storm can still rage but when Jesus is in the boat of our life then we are safe.
So John has showed Jesus to be Lord of the physical world and now he shows him to be Lord of life. Next John shows how Jesus is the bread of life!
