I heard a priest talk of this gospel once and what he said has stayed with me. He spoke of the symbolism of this gospel. The disciples in the boat represent all mankind. When Peter recognises the Lord in the distance he jumps into the water and wades across to meet him.
Peter represents the person who sees Jesus as he truly is, the Son of God and his jump into the water represents the person who is willing to wade through life (water always represents life in the Bible) in search of Jesus.
Its a beautiful interpretation, it fits so well with the meaning of being a Christian in a world where Christians seems to be in such a minority.
