Gospel of John 6:22-29 Reflection:
We are still on Chapter 6 of John, which began with Jesus feeding the multitude and then walking on the water to the disciples in the boat.
After the feeding of the crowd the people did not know where Jesus had gone; they did not see him walking on the water, that was for the disciples only.
The next morning the crowd began to look for Jesus and expressed surprise that he was on the far side of the lake.
Knowing human nature, Jesus says that they are following him because he can give them bread to eat but that they should work for bread in their life that is eternal bread which gives eternal life.
Jesus tells them that this is the "kind of food that the Son of Man is offering you."
Then the people ask him what are they to do and Jesus gives a wonderfully simple answer as to the work of the Christian: "This is working for God: you must believe in the one he has sent."
We complicate the Christian life with so many rules and regulations and all Jesus says is that we must believe in him.
What we are to do after we believe in him is between Jesus and the individual, but we are always on the wrong track if we are not first believing in the Lord.
At the most basic point, the christian faith is a faith in a person, the person of Jesus.
