Today, John relates the story of Jesus walking on the water. Again John is pointing out something about Jesus by use of a miracle. Water is the symbol of life. Storms reflect the problems of life and the struggle with the storm is the struggle of existence.
The apostles were making no headway no matter how hard they rowed. Jesus appears out of nowhere, calmly walking over the water of life and ignoring the storms which are the struggle of life. He simply walks on, in complete control of all that is going on. And as soon as Jesus reaches the boat, the storm stops. Jesus makes all things normal and calm. He has dominion over life and nature. This understanding of Jesus is crucial to understanding the rest of chapter 6.
