Today's first reading from Isaiah speaks about Jesus as a bringer of justice, but it is in the way that Jesus is described that is so startling. We think of the man who brings justice as riding in, all guns blazing and capturing the criminals with ease. Jesus "does not cry aloud or shout, he does not break the crushed reed nor quench the wavering flame." There is no big display with this man.
It is the same all through Holy Week and the Passion. Jesus just quietly accepts whatever comes his way. We never learn, do we? Jesus is God. And as God he is utterly above this world and is untouchable by it. Yet he chooses to die as an act of obedience to his Father in heaven. He knows that all things are under the control of his Father and he is prepared to leave all things in his hands, even his own life. As we go through the readings this week, notice how Jesus is always in control and how all things happen as he has designed.
