Gospel of Luke 24:13.35 Reflection:
Today we have one of those very human stories from the gospel that really brings home to us the effect that the death of Jesus had on people. It is Sunday evening and two disciples are heading home. They stayed in the city to see if anything happened and then they decided to go home and back to their work.
It is so like that for us in life, we keep going until we have to give up and then suddenly God steps in. The disciples on the road to Emmaus had lost all hope. They were even surprised to meet someone who did not know of their disappointment, asking the stranger if he was the only person who did not know of what had happened.
Then the stranger gave the disciples an insight they had never seen before: he explained the scriptures to them and showed how all the writings of the Old Testament witnessed to Jesus.
Where did Jesus go when he broke the bread?
Did you ever ask yourself that or why could he not have stayed?
He did stay! When he blessed the bread it became his body. He was in the bread. And he is still in the bread that we receive every day at Mass.
Jesus has not left us orphans!
