Gospel of Luke 24:35-49 Reflection:
The 1st readings this week are from Acts and they tell of the effect that the resurrection had on the apostles. Yesterday Peter healed a cripple who was sitting at the temple gate.
Today we have the follow up. The people are amazed at what has happened. Peter explains that it is through the power of God, the same God who raised Jesus, and in the name of Jesus that the man was healed.
He emphasizes that the prophets had foretold that the Christ would suffer. But he also says that the Jews did not fully understand what they were doing when they killed Jesus.
The gospel today is a follow on from yesterday as well when we heard about the disciples on the road to Emmaus.
Today's Gospel has the apostles in the upper room when Jesus appears in their midst. He asks for something to eat and then explains the scriptures again to his disciples.
There is a question hanging over all this. What happened to the apostles and disciples that turned them from cowards to heroes almost overnight?
That is the big effect of the resurrection; we no longer fear anything and actively remove all obstacles. When the apostles became this committed they could do anything!
