Wisdom: 1:12-22 Reflection:
The book of Wisdom could have been written for the modern atheist because it describes the attitude of the atheist so well.
In the opening line of today’s reading we hear that the presence of the just man annoys the wicked. That is why there are so many atheists today, people don’t want to live by God’s law so the presence of a person who does annoys them, “Before us he stands, a reproof to our way of thinking, the very sight of him weighs our spirits down, his way of life is not life other men’s....”
The reading goes on to say that the wise man, the man who believes in God, sees through the unbeliever as counterfeit.
We see this most in our politicians. They know how a good man should behave and they try to imitate him but they can’t because they would sell their soul for a vote.
“The virtuous man holds aloof from our doings as if from filth...”
What a condemnation of the wicked. Jesus sees through them, and they know it, and they hate him for it. “Let us condemn him to a shameful death....”
That is their plan for him. How stupid they are, full of hate and pride, and we are still seeing this attitude in the world today, the attitude of 'we will do what we want' and if we shout down the Church it will go away, if we pretend God’s word is irrelevant then it shall become so.
When will we ever learn?
