Traditionally this is the day that Judas sets out his plan to hand Jesus over to the authorities. He goes to the Jews and asks what they will give to him if he betrays Jesus. Thirty pieces of silver; the price of a slave.
There is a darkness about today's gospel. The end is coming. As we prepare for the climax of Holy Week we are being drawn in to the plot of the Jews and we are asked to reflect on the whole situation of Jesus, his impending death, his humble acceptance of that death and the vindictive way in which it is brought about.
Without being too hard on ourselves we should think of where we fit into the whole scene. We cannot judge too hard. We often betray the Lord and we often work things to our own advantage. Before we judge too harshly we should look at our own behaviour.
