Today we celebrate the feast of the Annunciation. We are actually two weeks late with this feast as this year March 25th fell during Holy Week and then we had the Easter Octave.
I have an old friend who is a priest and he often talks about this feast, but he comes at it from a novel viewpoint.
"Why do you think God chose Gabriel out of all the angels? What do you think went through the mind of Gabriel when God asked him to go and talk to a young girl of Israel?"
Then he goes on: "Our whole salvation depended on the response of Mary, the salvation of the whole world hung in the balance. What is she said, NO"?
"Can you imagine all of heaven holding their breath as they await the answer of this young girl? The waiting, and the great cheer of excitement when she says yes."
That's the way my old friend sees this feast, the day that marks the beginning of our salvation, the day the Word became flesh.
Imagine, our salvation and the salvation of the whole world, hinged on the "Yes" of a young girl!
