Feast of SS Peter and Paul Reflection
These two men are considered by the Church to be the founders of the Church in Rome and so when a feast day was chosen for them the traditional date of the founding of Rome by Romulus in 753BC was taken over; Romulus founded the old Rome, Peter and Paul the new.
In hindsight there appears to be divine providence in the way that Peter and Paul were chosen; Peter was the rock upon whom the new Church would be built and Paul was chosen by Christ to be the apostle to the gentiles.
Both these men saw Jesus in his glory; Peter at the Transfiguration and Paul when he was taken up into heaven at his conversion.
Both of them had problems with Jesus; Peter denied him three times, Paul persecuted the Church.
But both of them became ardent apostles when they were finally converted; they gave their life to Christ fully, worked tirelessly for him and died joyously for the Lord.
