Feast of St Alphonsus Liguori
Today we have the feast of another founder of a great order, the Redemptorists. St Alphonsus Liguori was born in 1696 in Naples and began life as a lawyer who later changed course in life and became a priest.
At the time there was a fierce heresy in Europe that was striking fear into the people. The heresy was Jansenism.
Cornelius Jansen, Bishop of Ypres, put too much stress on original sin, the depravity of the human being and the punishment of God. He went too far on God's justice and did not take account of his mercy. According to Jansen we were almost all dammed.
St Alphonsus spoke out against this heresy and showed how a balance has to be drawn up between God's justice and his mercy.
Alphonsus founded the Redemptorists as a preaching order. This is still their great ministry today. Alphonsus' legacy is found in the gentle holiness and purity that members of his order try to attain.
