Gospel of Matthew 18:15-20 Reflection:
In today’s Gospel, Jesus shows us something of the practical way of thinking that he had: if you have a disagreement with a friend go and talk to him. Only after talking to him and if no agreement is reached bring it to the community.
Compare that to today where often the first place we go is to the solicitors, perhaps with a defence of our ‘rights’ on our mind. Insisting on our rights gets us into so much bother. Jesus didn’t insist on his rights; he obeyed the Father.
Then he moves into the spiritual world, ‘what you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven and what you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.’
What is he saying?
If we don’t forgive on earth we shall carry that un-forgiveness over into heaven and if we forgive on earth we shall have that act of forgiveness carried over into heaven. By our actions here, our hardness of heart or otherwise, we are setting the tone of our life in the next world.
Remember though, we can’t go to heaven with un-forgiveness in our heart, we have to have all that stuff out of us before we can get in.
No wonder there is a purgatory!
