The opening line of this passage carries one of the most significant quotes in the New Testament: "Peace I bequeath to you, my own peace I give you, a peace the world can not give, this is my gift to you." Here Jesus says something extraordinary, it is his peace we should strive for. He is claiming to have the ability to set our hearts at rest...not his teaching, not his life, but he himself, he can give us peace. Again Jesus is presenting us with the question, what king of person can say "I will give you peace?" What is the peace of Christ? Is it something shallow? This it cannot possibly be because so many martyrs have died in his peace and no one dies for a shallow peace. The peace of Christ is the certainty that we are loved by him, that he is Lord and that he is in control of all things in this life and the next. When
we abandon our lives to him, he can then work in our hearts and make us secure.
This is the peace of Christ!
