READING I: Genesis 49:2, 8-10
RESPONSORIAL: Psalms 72:1-2, 3-4ab, 7-8, 17
GOSPEL: Matthew 1:1-17
Matthew gives us the list of the ancestors of Jesus. It contains something unheard for the time, three women. Let alone are there three women but these women were not even Israelite, they were outsiders and each of them, Tamar, Rahab and Ruth brought something unique to the story of the people of Israel. At the time of writing, women were not important in society, they had no status, so why did Matthew include them? Perhaps it was to prepare us for the mention of Mary as Jesus' mother or maybe it was to show us that something new was being pronounced, something which would include everyone, even the outsider and the lowly. In a world where only the rich and powerful seem to count, now there is Good News!
