Born in Spain in 1506 Francis was one of the men who joined St Ignatius in founding the Jesuits. He was sent on mission to the far east and worked in Japan and India before heading out for China in 1552.On route to China, where he wished to preach the word of God, he died on the island of Shangchwan. There is a poignant legend that Francis died with his hand outstretched towards China in a loving longing to get there. Perhaps he was blessing that country. With the recent exodus from Ireland and other countries, to foreign chimes to find work, many parents suffer heartache at the fact children and relatives shall not be home for Christmas. We all have loved ones far away and this legend of Francis touches many hearts! Feast of St Francis Xavier
