When I read this passage I thought perhaps we are coming back to these times again. Paul talks about believers in Jesus being insulted and open to violence.
In the western world any person who stands by Christian teaching is mocked and ridiculed. Gradually the Christian is becoming more and more sidelined in society and faith is being seen as something of an oddity.
Paul says that in this atmosphere of intimidation we shall need the grace of perseverance to continue.
This cycle of ridicule and mocking of the Christian has always been there. The venomous atheism that we see today may be new to us but it is only the coming out of the hatred of God that has always been there. What do we do?
Paul gives the answer: "Only a little time and the one that is coming will have come."
Jesus does not leave us too long in despair, whether by a touch of grace or an event in our lives, Jesus lets us know that we are on the right path. Then we learn that his peace is enough, enough in all the troubles and pains of life, enough to keep us going until we finally meet him...when he will show us how "all will be well".
What a great God we have!
